![]() ![]() In 2003 the Campbells became a household name and the most successful touring act of the year with more the 200 live performances, 60 flights and 180 000 km of road travel in a calendar year. Their second album “Rooi Rok Bokkie” was an instant hit and achieved more than 100 000 CD sales. The Campbells appealed to both the English and Afrikaans markets and decided to write and produce a few Afrikaans songs. Immediately there was talk about the new young South African cowboys that performed country, rock ‘n roll and pop dance music. In 2000 Kosie proceeded to sign the Campbells as artists with Select Music and released their debut album “You’re My Mate” during 2001. Kosie asked if they would record material for his record label and the Campbells agreed. Every year the Campbells improved musically and performed more frequently, often to bigger audiences.ĭuring 1999 the brothers met Kosie van Niekerk, the owner of Select Music. At this stage Harry was a gifted guitarist and Tony played drums, keyboards and was the lead vocalist in the group. It was at this stage that the Campbell Brothers had officially become a duo and in 1995 the brothers were considered a professional music group.ĭuring their tertiary education the Campbells invested in recording studio equipment and commenced audio recordings on a part time basis. During high school the brothers realized that it would only be the two of them that would put the effort in, to go all the way. Although a primary school band could not be considered professional the slick performances by the bands attracted many followers and earned the band members a reasonable amount of pocket money. Many school bands and friendships were formed during their school years. Tony matriculated in 1994 and then obtained a National Diploma in Electrical Engineering as well as Financial Concepts and Marketing Management. ![]() Harry matriculated in 1993 and went on to study Motor Mechanics and Electrician Work. Like most children the Campbell’s attended government schools. Sandra encouraged her sons to be fully bilingual. The Campbell’s mother, Sandra, was raised in Pretoria in an Afrikaans home. Their English speaking father, Harry Campbell Senior, taught his sons to play various musical instruments and provided them with musical inspiration at a young age. I don’t know if I would have done English at university, or even become a comedian. The brothers Harry and Tony Campbell were both born in Cape Town. My life would have been very different without Mark E Smith. They expanded my horizons as I learned more about the people their lyrics alluded to, like Franz Kafka, and I listened to their influences like the Velvet Underground. Finally, through sheer weight of attrition, I heard I’m Into CB and something clicked, and I became a lifelong fan. I grew up listening to John Peel, but found the Fall irritating, repetitive and unintelligible. The entire double album of Public Castration Is a Good Idea by Swans. It’s hard to let go of my childhood attachment to the Smiths, but I don’t know how to square Morrissey’s solo stuff with what he’s become. I remember hearing How Soon Is Now when I went to see the Smiths at Birmingham Hippodrome and dancing to it at a disco in Tucson, Arizona in 1995. Loads of artists end up doing terrible things, but the Smiths meant such a lot to my generation, to have him drift to the far right doesn’t sit. So many blokey songs like The Boys of Summer by Don Henley felt massively overproduced back in the 80s, but I now listen to them with a real sense of nostalgia. The song I secretly like but tell everyone I hate It’s really danceable with a great mandolin break. At first, people think: “What’s this rubbish?” then Snoop Dogg creeps up. There’s a six-minute version of Snoop Dogg’s song Gin & Juice by this great hillbilly band called the Gourds.
